Distributed temperature and strain sensing (DTSS) and acoustic (DAS) solutions provide real-time data 24/7 for pipeline monitoring. These two technologies can be used together for advanced remote pipeline management; ensuring asset integrity, early leak detection and risk mitigation along pipelines hundreds of kilometres in length.
Immediate detection of pipeline leaks can be ensured using these state-of-the-art technologies: the DTSS detects pipeline leaks by analysing temperature variations in the ground near the leak, while the DAS solution detects the noise and vibrations generated by the leak. The alarm event is immediately sent to the asset operator to report the incident. Both solutions accurately detect the location of the event, which facilitates the repair work. This leads to significant time and cost reductions in the maintenance and commissioning of pipelines.
In addition, DAS technology monitors pipelines for malicious activity caused by third party intrusion. Thousands of acoustic measurement data points are collected throughout the asset, providing real-time information about possible theft or unauthorised construction work.
In addition, DTSS technology is sensitive to ground movements along the driving route. These movements can result from seismic events, landslides or rock falls.
